Session Description: There is a wealth of research indicating the benefits of phonics-focused instruction for students who struggle to acquire reading and spelling skills. This session will focus on the orthographic component of phonics instruction and the highly predictable nature of the English spelling system. The link between orthography (letter symbols), phonology (sounds), and morphology (word meaning) will be discussed, as well as how to use each of these components to analyze error patterns. Finally, we will model specific instructional practices and tools that support spelling skill development within the classroom.
