Congratulations to Dr. Jane Hannah, recipient of Hubert Smothers Award

Dr. Jane Hannah, Assistant Head of Academics and Programs, received the Hurbert Smothers Award for Teaching Excellence from the Tennessee Association of Independent Schools (TAIS) on Sunday, November 4.
The Hubert Smothers Award is presented to teachers within TAIS who have evidenced a deep commitment to the teaching profession and who have demonstrated excellence in all they do. The criteria for nomination are substantial and far-reaching. A nominee must:
• Have 20 years in the teaching profession
• Be a "life-long learner" and demonstrate an enthusiasm for teaching
• Have a long-term positive impact on students
• Have exhibited leadership in extra-curricular activities that involve education
• Have a positive relationship with colleagues and administration
• Possess a sensitivity to the needs of students and work unselfishly toward their development
• Make contributions to further education beyond the school community and impact the wider local, state, or national educational community

In nominating Dr. Hannah for the award, Dr. Jeff Mitchell, Head of School noted, “I have lost track of all the parent and student testimonials I have heard regarding Dr. Jane Hannah --hundreds in my relatively short five years at Currey Ingram. This quote is but one, ‘Dr. Hannah is in the top three best people I know, and I would guess that most people that know her think the same. Without her guidance and educational wisdom, our son's future would not be where it is today.’ “

Currey Ingram Academy is a world-class college preparatory school for students with learning differences. “With that, and unequivocally, there is no single person who has impacted the program we deliver more than Dr. Hannah. If you were asked to create the best possible Lower School environment for students with learning differences, look no further than the educational masterpiece that is our Lower School,” said Dr. Mitchell.

Dr. Hannah has spent her career parlaying her impressive educational training. You would be hard-pressed to find a person who understands the theory-practice connection better than Dr. Hannah. Her countless presentations, both internally and externally, on dozens of topics speak to her commitment to evidence-based instruction, which leads to implementation of the most effective approaches.

Dr. Hannah earned her doctorate from Peabody of Vanderbilt University and her B.S. in elementary education and M.Ed. in special education from Middle Tennessee State University. She was Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University from 1991 – 2000 and worked as a Behavior and Learning Specialist, while directing the Summer Day Treatment Program (STP) for children with an Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Dr. Hannah is a former classroom and special education teacher, as well as a supervisor of special education in a Tennessee public school system. Prior to Currey Ingram in 2000, Dr. Hannah was making a difference in both public K-12 schools and colleges, including Vanderbilt University.

As Assistant Head for Academics and Programs at Currey Ingram, her impact has extended beyond Currey Ingram. She has presented at national conferences. She has participated on accreditation teams. She was instrumental in the establishment of the ADHD Summer Treatment Program, in which the vast majority of attendees are not Currey Ingram students. She was instrumental in establishing our Scientific Advisory Board - a collection of top-flight learning differences researchers. Most important, she has enhanced our public-purpose outreach initiatives by developing our Annette Eskind Institute of Learning sessions each year that attract hundreds of parents, educators and professionals from across the region and by coordinating our Neuroscience and Education: The Connection Symposium with Vanderbilt Kennedy Center, which draws educators and professionals from across the United States.

Dr. Hannah’s depth and breadth of knowledge pertaining to educating students with learning differences is surpassed only by her passion for these students. Dr. Hannah’s personal mission is to ensure that every single student with a learning difference gets the education he/she deserves.
