Mustang Message: Surveys

by Dr. Jeffrey L. Mitchell, Head of School

Well-done surveys can be valuable for organizations. Surveys allow the collective opinion of the group to be heard. Better yet, a survey can go beyond individual anecdotes to capture the group’s “story.” When results are positive, surveys are wonderful ways to celebrate who you are and what you do. When they point out challenges, they do so through the power of collective opinion. As strategic tools, surveys work in tandem with other methods for determining strategic vision (e.g., Board and administration strategic planning, accreditation processes, daily conversations/observations, and resource availability). This synergy allows for solid decision-making over the long term.

I have been reviewing the results of the recent parent survey. Thank you to all who took the time to share your opinions with us. I am very pleased to report that the findings from the “overall satisfaction” question are worth celebrating. With 204 parents responding to this question, the average for overall satisfaction is 4.51. Broken down another way, 97.5% of the respondents, were satisfied or completely satisfied, with a strong majority of those being completely satisfied. I have used surveys for years and have had access to databases of independent school surveys that all ask the overall satisfaction question. At no time have I come across a number this strong. A typical overall satisfaction is about 4.20. I have been accused about getting a little too excited about data results, but this result is truly an objective and collective testament to all the wonderful people that make Currey Ingram the school that it is.

I have always believed that if I ask parents and other constituents to take their time to thoughtfully complete a survey that I have an obligation to give back and present a summary of those results. If you are interested in finding out more, I will lead a parent session in February, in which I will present additional findings that speak to the current state of the school. Please watch your Division newsletters for the details of this morning session.
