There is a new equine program this year at Currey Ingram Academy that is growing in leaps and bounds.  The program was proposed last year, and is now lead by Equine Director Julie Richardson, a teacher and PATH International Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor with over 32 years of horse experience. CIA now has seven equine partners, including two adorable miniature Palominos.  The historic barn near the Farm House and the surrounding farm land and facilities have been revamped to make the perfect spot to foster equine-facilitated learning.
Equine facilitated learning is a hands-on educational program that uses the interactions and developing relationships between horses and humans in an environment of learning and self-discovery.  It is designed to promote personal growth and the development of positive social/life skills in a fun and supportive environment.  Horses make a natural partner to teach us about ourselves and society, develop skills, and practice better ways to navigate life.

Some of the skill areas touched upon in class lessons include social skills such as understanding non-verbal cues, modulation of communication techniques, team work, empathy and boundaries. Life choice skills such as setting, evaluating and achieving realistic goals, knowing when to ask for help, understanding consequences and being responsible for decisions.  EFL (equine facilitated learning) also teaches time management, accountability, developing coping skills and much more.

There is something for every student at CIA with Horsemanship classes, summer equine camps, private riding lessons and active barn clubs.  There is more to come, and the students at Currey Ingram Academy will continue to benefit greatly not only academically, but in all aspects of their lives from such a unique and forward thinking program.
