Social-Emotional Learning

At Currey Ingram, we believe that social-emotional development plays a critical role in student success. The RULER Approach to Social and Emotional Learning (‘‘RULER’’) is used across all grades and with all students at Currey Ingram. RULER is an evidenced-based approach to social and emotional learning developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. The knowledge, attitude and skills associated with RULER are as follows:

  • R-Recognizing emotion in self and others
  • U-Understanding the causes and consequences of emotion
  • L-Labeling emotions accurately
  • E-Expressing emotions in helpful ways
  • R-Regulating emotions effectively

The goal of RULER is to improve the quality of school social interactions so that the climate becomes more supportive, empowering and engaging. This is accomplished by integrating skill-building lessons and tools so that teachers and students develop their emotional literacy.

The tools and skills that are introduced through RULER are appropriate for all students and faculty; thus, it is a Tier One intervention. Through research, RULER has been shown to help students be less anxious, exhibit fewer attention problems, improve their academic performance and have greater leadership skills. Teachers have been shown to be more engaging, supportive and effective. Classrooms also have more positive climates and less bullying. Because RULER is a Tier One Social-Emotional Learning Program, we recognize that some students may need greater support than this model offers. Thus, additional interventions will be recommended in these situations.
