Lower School Students Promote Mental Health Awareness with iMatter Project

In the spirit of mental health awareness -- and using digital avenues to support mental and emotional wellbeing -- Lower School students have produced a touching and meaningful series of iMatter statements to promote self-worth, coping skills and to remove the stigma around emotional and mental health challenges.

Before the project began, messages were shared with the students about the importance of remembering that each and every student matters -- not for any external achievements or qualities -- but purely because they are who they are. After listening to the book You Matter by Christian Robinson, students wrote and shared statements about why they matter. These statements, affectionately dubbed "iMatter" statements, serve as a poignant reminder of the critical importance of this message for all of our students and the work Currey Ingram faculty do each day to support our students’ in cultivating an innate sense of worth from a very young age.

Digital and virtual tools for mental health are pervasive and crucial as students and families turn to digital devices for learning and work more than ever. Our devices can and should be used as a tool for our mental health just as much as any other purpose.

Below is a list of recommended mental health apps and virtual tools for kids and families to explore at home, all are free or offered at a low cost:

  • SmilingMind- daily mindfulness & meditation for all ages, personalized toward goals including sleep, stress, concentration and more
  • SuperStretch Yoga- for kids alone, or kids & parents together
  • DreamyKid- guided relaxation, affirmations, sleep stories and issue-specific meditations for kids
  • Three Good Things- happiness & gratitude journal, for all ages
  • Apart of Me- for kids & youth experiencing grief and loss
A special thank you to Amy and Peter Cornell (parents of Goose Durkoth, 3rd grade) for their generous donation of the new Lower School iPads which helped make this project possible.
